Last night, or morning...somewhere around 1(ish)? I'm not quite sure...Alex was watching a VSauce video on Youtube. Although I love VSauce videos, I was only 1/2 way listening because I was working on some more illustrations to my book. HOWEVER, something caught my attention and it was almost as if it spoke directly to me. It was a quote from Fernando Pessoa.
Now, to be honest, until last night I had never even heard of Fernando Pessoa, but now I think I kind of love him. The quote that was mentioned in the video was this:
"Direct experience is an evasion, or a hiding place, for those without any imagination.
Reading about the risks incurred by a man who hunts tigers, I felt all the risks worth feeling,
save the actual physical risk, which wasn't really worth feeling, for it vanished without a trace.
Men of action are the involuntary slaves of the men of reason:
the worth of things depends on their interpretation.
Certain men make things which other men invest with meaning, bringing them to life.
To narrate is to create, while to live is merely to be lived."
It was the last line of the quote that caught me.
So I went back and watched the video:
Michael (VSauce), doesn't talk about Fernando Pessoa until the end of the video, but I think it is a video worth watching all the way through, and I hope that you do.
I have been narrating my life every day (minus a few) every day since Elijah passed away. Granted, not always poetic or exciting. Sometimes inspiring, most of the time not. But hearing those words: "To narrate is to create, while to live is merely to be lived"- it made my heart sing.
Maybe one day I will publish this blog as a book. Who knows who would read it, but my story (my family's story. Elijah's story), will always be around. My body is not eternal-but my books and my words are. That is pretty powerful.
I only hope that my words are inspiring and helpful. I hope they create love.
Speaking of words, I need to get back to work on researching kickstarter vs indiegogo, and other fun marketing stuff while I wait for Alex to get out of Boyscouts.
Sending you all lots of love. CREATE a story for the world. Be a narrator. I love you all.
Pray for our word. Pray for our earth. Pray for each other. Pray for our families. Pray for our children. Pray for hope. Pray for peace. Pray for love. Pray for you! Pray for me. And always always pray for my sweet sweet Elijah.
Thank you.
Your life was short,
but your story will live forever.
Like the shortest poem in the world,
it is a powerful tale
of love.
My heart is so full because you are a part of my life.
My arms are so empty without you.
How do I make it each day?
I have no idea.
But I am still here,
so I will continue to tell each of our stories.
Always.
